You Are the Captain of Your Vessel

I think sailboats are beautiful to watch. I’ve never actually ridden in one. It’s on my bucket list to go sailing so someday I will. I think they are fascinating, peaceful and graceful.

But what is truly amazing is that such a small thing as the rudder can determine where the boat goes. The massive waves and currents of the ocean push and pull against the vessel. And yet with a small adjustment of the rudder the captain of the boat takes his vessel where he wants. He can’t control the waves of the sea but he can control the direction of his ship.

Like the rudder on a great ship, whatever you chose to let your mind dwell upon will determine the direction of your life. I’ve become vividly aware of this truth lately. I have had so many thoughts rolling around in my head that I noticed when I let those thoughts run loose I ended up crying or fuming mad. I was allowing my thoughts to direct the direction I went.

Philippians 4:6-8 gives us very clear instructions on how true this really is.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Finally, my brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think on these things.

The Bible has much to say about how we live life but this simple truth will impact your life more than most! When was the last time you stopped and asked yourself “What am I thinking about?” I challenge you to do just that.

Then ask yourself if the things you are thinking about are taking you where you really want to go. Because where your thoughts go, will be the direction of your life.

You are the captain of your vessel. Don’t let the waves of life toss you around as though you have no say in the matter. You do! Do not underestimate the power of your thoughts to direct your ship in the direction of your choosing. So choose wisely.
