Winter Wonders!

I think that every time God sees a snowflake forming He must think of the children and smile. To see the delight on a child’s face when they see snow falling mysteriously from the sky is a wonder to behold. A child will stand transfixed by the marvel of it for hours begging to go out and play in God’s glorious playground! Then when they are finally bundled up and sent out into the winter wonderland of whiteness they play with abandon totally unaware of how cold it is!

As I sit and watch my kids play in the snow it makes my heart smile. It brings joy to me to see them so excited. I do not share their exuberant enthusiasm. I spent ¾ of my life in Alaska and have endured more snow than I ever cared to endure again. But since moving a bit north again I have enjoyed the snow simply because of my children!

I believe it is entirely possible that God made the snow with children on His mind. We can get a glimpse of what Jesus thought of children in Matthew 19:13-15.

Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, “Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.”  And after laying His hands on them, He departed from there.

This may not seem like a big deal to modern America. But in this time period children were seen and not heard. They were not held in high esteem and most definitely would not have been allowed to approach a great teacher or leader. Jesus was unlike any leader of that day. He valued the unvalued of His time.

Isn’t it ironic that snow is a child’s delight and each and every snowflake is unique and different? Not one is the same as another. I love how everything in creation declares the wonder of God! We are each unique and special even though there are millions of us on this Earth.

So as I sit by my window and watch the snow gently fall to the ground I am reminded that God loves the little children so much that He made the spectacle of snow just for them! Take a moment and enjoy the wonders of winter with the children in your life!
